2nd Biennial International Indigenous Design Forum

Hau Kainga

The Hau Kainga/home people of Ngāi Tahu - Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāti Wheke - will play host to Ngā Aho and their manuhiri/guests in welcoming them to the conference.

A Wānanga style experience will be provided where guests will be accommodated for the duration of the Forum at the Marae (Indigenous Community Centre). Nā Te Kore will also run across a range of venues that will highlight and showcase the diverse nature of the Christchurch rebuild post-earthquake. The schedule will include presentations, panel discussions, workshops and indigenous site visits.

Tuahiwi

The pre-European village of Tuahiwi lies 20 minutes north of Christchurch. The local people are Ngāi Tūāhuriri (the descendants of Tūāhuriri), whose ancestors established the old pā (fort) of Kaiapoi that was once the political and economic capital of the tribe. The heart of the village today is the Tuahiwi Marae, which is surrounded by homes, a school, church and urupā (cemetery).

Rising to the west are the Southern Alps and their foothills that were once abounded with forests and bird life. To the east stretches the Te Tai o Mahaanui coastline, named after Māui’s canoe. Connecting the mountains to sea is Ngāi Tūāhuriri’s principal river, the Waimakariri.

Rāpaki

The small settlement of Rāpaki sits on the western shores of Whaka-raupō (Lyttelton Harbour), nestled between a sandy beach with hot water springs, and a boulder beach with an impressive jetty. At the heart of their village stands Te Wheke, an ornately carved meeting house adorned with traditional woven panels (tukutuku).

The people of Rāpaki are Ngāti Wheke (the descendants of Wheke), who are distinguished for having established the first mātaitai (exclusive customary fishing reserve) in New Zealand in 1998 in an effort to curb the appetite of commercial and recreational fishers; shellfish, sand shark (pioke), flounder and many other fish were once taken from the harbour.
